“One of the perennial questions that every culture
answers in its own way concerns what should and should not be eaten…
There is only one diet that feeds the whole of us - a conscious eating
of whatever nourishes and delights both body and soul.”
Sam Keen.
In my years of study and experience in the field of
nutrition, perhaps one of the most important insights I have gained
is that true nourishment is not a simple matter of knowing what to
eat or even always eating “healthy” foods... There is a deeper level
of knowing that we need to access if we wish our diet and our life
to reach their full potential to feed and heal us.
Given
the overwhelming amount of information available today on the subject
of diet and health, and the fact that we are all unique in our biochemical
make ups and our particular life situations, I believe that ultimately
we must look inside ourselves for the real answers to what will best
nourish us. When we are in a state of balance and integration, we
can trust our inner knowing to guide us to what will best support
our health and well-being in a given moment.
However,
the fast pace and demands of our lives today, as well as less than
healthy eating habits we may have grown up with, can often leave us
feeling uncentered and out of touch with our Inner wisdom. Our relationship
with food is a very sensitive indicator of our relationship with ourselves
and with our sense of inner connection. Imbalances at the physical,
mental, or emotional level are almost always reflected when we sit
down to eat. We may notice cravings for certain foods, a tendency
to overeat, or a feeling of not being fully satisfied after we eat.
If stressful ways of eating and living begin to show up at the physical
level in ways such as fatigue, poor digestion and indigestion, weakened
resistance to infections, or perhaps some actual disease process,
it is time to stop and begin to re-establish contact with our inner
essence.
Every
person is unique; what Is needed to restore our contact with this
inner source is a highly individual matter. Besides taking steps to
create a more conscious lifestyle and a healthy relationship with
ourselves, I have found that certain foods and/or supplements do support
particular healing processes and promote balance and centeredness
better than others. If we’ve lost touch with our body’s instinctive
preference for healthy, balancing food, we may benefit from assistance
to help us restore our inner sense at first. Once we become aware
of the effects of different foods and lifestyle choices on our overall
sense of wellbeing, our eating starts to become more effortless, enjoyable,
and self-sustaining.
It
is my goal to offer you the nutritional information and awareness
you may need to begin to make whatever level of change and healing
you are seeking to create in your life. I emphasize a personalized
approach which addresses each person’s unique needs and concerns,
drawing from a variety of healing traditions and natural remedies
as needed and/or appropriate to your goals. My personal process of
recovery from a severe stress-related illness has given me knowledge
of many natural healing alternatives to what traditional medicine
and nutritional science can offer. I especially emphasize those foods,
supplements, and healing essences I have found most effective for
reducing stress, fatigue, and anxiety and for promoting the healthy
function of afl systems of the body, particularly the digestive and
immune systems.
There
is an energy of healing and wisdom that we access when we simply become
present and look within. Once we take the time to listen to ourselves
in a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, we begin to access this healing
source. I believe that if our life, our food choices, and our relationship
with ourselves do not support contact with this place of inner stillness,
then no food or supplement will ever meet its potential to create
health and wholeness. Ultimately, it is my intention to help you connect
with your own source of nutritional healing, wisdom and intuition..
.for this is what will enable you to create and sustain a consistent
state of health and well-being.
I am a registered dietitian and NYS certified dietitian-nutritionist
with a Master of Science degree in human nutrition from Cornell University,
as well as a BS in psychology. I have lived a wholistic lifestyle
and practiced Kripalu Yoga for the past 18 years. My own healing journey
with chronic fatigue syndrome the past few years enables me to offer
the unique perspective of one with a solid knowledge of the biochemical
and clinical aspects of nutrition, as well as the wholistic tools
and attitudes which have ultimately helped me the most. In addition
to my 11 years of experience as a registered and certified yoga teacher,
I am also certified by the American Reiki Master Association as a
Reiki and Shinju therapist. This gentle energy work helps to replenish,
heal, and balance the physical, mental, and emotional centers of the
body, promoting a sense of peace, relaxation, and well-being.
